Software – Max MSP and Modul8

Posted in Uncategorized on November 30, 2009 by adamskelton

Max msp is a coding program that pretty much lets you do anything with an input and output, the problem with this though is that neither me or Ali has used it before and we’re finding it hard to achieve the level of professionalism we want. I feel that if we can’t get it work how we want a VJ program might be the way to go.

Modul8 might work really well if we can get our visuals complex enough to layer and move and change when sound is played. The other upside to this software is that allows for 3D mapping.

3D Mapping

Posted in Uncategorized on November 30, 2009 by adamskelton

With Ali starting to do a lot of programming in Max msp i wanted to learn some £D mapping to add another dimension to our piece and is a skill i think will come in handy for other visuals.
Resolume is a VJing software that also allows for 3D mapping.

I feel like this will be pretty easy to set up and if done in such a way will make our piece really interesting.

Visual ideas – OP Art

This image from OP art resembles the kind of line art i would like experiment with, by changing the lines properties through sound i hope some really interesting visuals will be created.

I also found this website while looking for generative art. You can scroll through to create your own art, an idea our installation will be focusing on.

Electric Guitar and Drums to Midi

Posted in Performance Video on November 23, 2009 by adamskelton

The images above are from a video tutorial teaching you to turn an electric guitar into a midi sensor instrument. Using this i will be able to use an electric guitar to interact with an image or video along with a midi drum kit to create various effects tied to parameters such as pitch and volume.

Using the grid pattern of Mondrian’s painting we will affect the colour, lines and size of the blocks according to the volume, pitch and tone of both instruments, i hope that when both are played together new images will be created in realtime with lots of scope for experimentation.

Interactive music and colour

After some research me and Ali want to create an interactive wall of color or light that will react with both drums and guitar.
This is a technique I would love to learn and feel it would be a great example of performance video and lends itself to many other types of performance.

We have a starting point of Mondrian’s most famous image

The bold lines and colours are perfect for a bright interesting light/music performance.

New Project! Performance Video

Performance video is going to require a performance that will inspire the visuals or lend themselves to interesting concepts and i feel the Wooden Pigs a band Jamie showed us will be perfect for this.

Critique – Future Cinema – Empathy

Posted in future cinema on November 16, 2009 by adamskelton

Today we had our group critique. It was really useful to talk about our piece in front of the group with both tutors as we wanted as much input as possible. We started off by talking about the script and the narrative. It was stated by Liam as being a bit like a soap opera and we justified the need for the narrative to unfold in someway to keep the audience engaged, without this the lack of visuals would become more apparent. The lack of visuals was another main concern from the group, Elliott talked about experimenting with the hospital bed projection just so if we think the piece needs it we have something we can use. The tag-line brought up for this piece was “Radio Theatre” and i think we need to keep that in mind.

Sound is massive issue as most people didn’t get the fact that the dialogue and ambient sound for the room is going to be placed around the room with surround sound and the internal thoughts will be played through directional speakers built into the seats. this will give each audience member to get a different take on the emotions being brought up by the loss of someone that each character loved in someway or another.

I feel that everything we have achieved so far will not only get the audience to feel empathy but without visuals get them to transfer it to a personal interpretation.

The last few days…

After buying a set of speakers we started thinking more about the chair set up and also the props to go with it i.e. coats, bags and accessories. We started with some coats and we’ll pick other props as we go.

We also went through the script for a considerable amount of time to fine tune the spoken dialogue ready for recording. By sorting out the spoken dialogue first the thoughts will be easier and more relevant.

On Tuesday we again talked about the script and got a chair set up with the speakers and coat. The speakers worked really well and are perfect for what we want. For the rest of the day I got started with making the EKG heart-rate monitor.
